Youth Strong Maryvale™ brings together community to enrich the Cartwright School

West Phoenix – November 13, 2019

On November 2, 2019, over 150 volunteers joined Maryvale Revitalization Corporation for Youth Strong Maryvale: Cartwright School, a beautification and community-building event. Eleven different organizations from various sectors of the community gathered for one common goal: to strengthen our schools through acts of service and unite the Maryvale village through meaningful relationships.

The week of events began on Friday evening, when over 50 volunteers worked together to ensure that all the projects were prepped for the beautification event the next morning. The evening included food, camaraderie and fellowship.

Many volunteers, and then some, returned bright and early Saturday morning to support the school’s youth and educators by working alongside community stakeholders for an all-hands workday. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the 150+ volunteers of all ages and the generous event sponsors, the community was able to accomplish these fun projects that will help create safe and engaging spaces for students and teachers:

  • Enhanced 42 classroom doors with canvases ready for creative expressions
  • Built 6 planters for an educational garden
  • Added inspirational messages and artwork created for the students by their high school peers into four restrooms where often students find a few moments of respite
  • Refreshed the teacher’s lounge and workroom with new paint and furniture
  • Adding hopscotch and foursquare courts
  • Refreshed the entire campus with a deep cleaning from classrooms to the library, outdoor recreation areas, walkways and tree trimming
  • Restored an outdoor ramada providing shade to a favorite gathering spot

Volunteers enjoyed a hot lunch straight from the grill courtesy of LongHorn Steakhouse on 75th Avenue and Thomas.

A special thank you to Wells Fargo Foundation, Sunstate Equipment, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Longhorn Steakhouse, Trevor G. Browne High School’s Helping Those in Need club, Maryvale High School, HERO U Maryvale, NNR Multicultural, Cartwright School District, Cartwright School, Lowe’s Store #1042 and United Action Center.

The celebrations and comradery continued throughout the week, as the students were greeted to a fresh campus on Monday morning. The lines to see the artwork in the bathrooms were particularly long that day.  Later in the week, teachers and staff were treated to an appreciation luncheon. While the week of events have concluded, the dedication to our schools continues.
